DIY Project: How to Fix Paint Chips on Your Wall Like a Pro

Paint chips on walls are common, but they can make a room look worn and neglected. Fortunately, fixing them is an easy DIY project that anyone can tackle with the right tools and a bit of patience. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to repair paint chips and restore your walls to their former glory!

Tools and Materials Needed:

  1. Sandpaper (220-grit)

  2. Spackling paste or wall filler

  3. Putty knife

  4. Primer (optional, but recommended)

  5. Paint that matches your wall color

  6. Small paintbrush or roller

  7. Damp cloth

Step 1: Clean the Area Around the Paint Chip

Start by cleaning the area around the paint chip. Dust, dirt, or oils can affect how well the filler and paint adhere. Use a damp cloth to gently wipe down the area and then let it dry completely.

Step 2: Sand Down the Edges

Using 220-grit sandpaper, gently sand the edges around the chipped area. This smooths out any roughness, allowing for a more seamless repair. Sanding will also remove any loose paint, which helps prevent further peeling or chipping in the future.

Step 3: Apply Spackling Paste or Wall Filler

Once the area is smooth, use a putty knife to apply a thin layer of spackling paste or wall filler over the chipped area. Spread it evenly and feather the edges to blend into the surrounding wall. Be careful not to apply too much; you want just enough to fill in the chipped area.

Step 4: Let the Filler Dry and Sand Again

Allow the filler to dry completely, following the manufacturer’s instructions (usually a few hours). After it's dry, gently sand the patched area again to ensure it’s level with the rest of the wall. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth.

Step 5: Apply Primer (Optional but Recommended)

Priming the repaired area can help the paint adhere better and prevent the color from looking dull or mismatched. If you choose to use primer, apply a thin layer and let it dry fully before moving to the next step.

Step 6: Paint the Repaired Area

Now for the final touch! Use a small paintbrush or roller to apply paint over the repaired spot. If you don’t have leftover paint from the original wall color, you may need to match it at a local paint store. It’s best to start with a thin coat and add additional coats as needed for full coverage, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Step 7: Inspect and Touch Up if Necessary

Once the paint has dried, step back and check for any unevenness or rough edges. If necessary, add one more thin layer of paint or lightly sand any imperfections.

Bonus Tip: Prevent Future Chips

To avoid future paint chips, consider placing furniture away from the wall and using wall protectors behind frequently bumped areas. Additionally, choosing a high-quality paint can make your walls more resilient to wear and tear.
